Laura, have you read Bathe the Cat (Alice B McGinty) or Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle (Nina LaCour)? Those are two of my toddler's favourites right now (both queer!). We have also recently loved Sometimes All I Need is Me (Juliana Perdomo), The House in the Night (Susan Marie Swanson), Pride Puppy (Robin Stevenson), and It Feels Good to Be Yourself (Theresa Thom).
I've never been a picture book person until I had kids and it's a wonderful new world of book exploration.
Thank you for all of these recs! I loved Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle and It Feels Good to Be Yourself, but I will add the rest to my list. Picture books are wonderful, aren't they?
And thanks for the virtual hug, I appreciate it. 💗
Hi Laura—I read and loved Millions of Cats as a child —not surprised to recall the “dark” side—another fun one from the same era is another mouse story: Snippy and Snappy—also fairly dark. Interesting how children’s literature has veered away from that…I’m really enjoying your newsletters! ❤️Nancy
Oh, I love knowing that you read Millions of Cats as a kid! I just added Snippy and Snappy to my list.
The trends in children's lit are so interesting. I love a lot of what is coming out now, but some of it feels so empty and moralistic. Which is part of why I like reading picture books from many decades. And I'm so glad you're enjoying the newsletters!

Thank you for remind me I *need* to read more picture books. Slow Down looks so good!
It's so good! I think that you would love it.
