This is a relief to read, Laura. I've run into that a few times too. The other thing that happens is that I have a list of themes/subjects but when the day arrives, something else wants to be said. I think your backlist is terrific.
Thanks! And yes, I think you are right on. It's good to have structure but it doesn't always serve us to hold onto it rigidly. Glad you enjoyed the backlist!
I love all your newsletters, especially this one! Real Life is a book I loved and can't wait to re-read and Tomboyland has been on my list for ages. Now I know I must pick it up. Hope you are able to make it to Broadside Bookshop (I work there!) on Saturday! We are so blessed to have so many amazing bookstores in the Valley!
Thanks, Rosamond! I am excited for you to read Tomboyland, it is so good! And I definitely plan on stopping by Broadside on Saturday. Maybe I'll see you there!
I love that you gave yourself permission, Laura -- and this was such a great issue, so you made the right call! Melissa Faliveno is from the small town I live in (I was born and raised in Madison but live in a suburb now), but I'm sorry to admit I still haven't read Tomboyland. (I'm putting it on hold right now to remedy that!)
Thanks, Sarah! What a fun coincidence about the town you live in! Obviously I love Tomboyland, so thrilled to encourage you to pick it up. I'll be curious to hear what you think of it as someone from Wisconsin!
One of my dear friends (who also lives in my town) interviewed Faliveno for our local city magazine, and it was super interesting to read their reflections about small-town Wisconsin life versus what I experienced, which was definitely city life (and certainly compared to most of the rest of the state). I will report back once I've read it (though it might be awhile -- I have multiple TBR piles all around my house, each one absolutely teetering at this point).
I more often than not wake up on a Saturday morning and I have no idea what I'm going to write about. Thankfully, I don't have to bake anything to go with my books, or I'd be totally lost. The cake looks yummy and I hadn't heard of a couple of these books before. Thanks for the recommendations.
Always glad to spread around some love for lesser-known books! And I'm impressed you get a newsletter out on days you have no idea what you're going to write—my brain would implode a little if that were me every time. :-)
If my writing was as detailed as yours (baking and writing), my brain would probably implode also. And here I sit again on a Saturday morning still contemplating what I'm going to write about this weekend. Hopefully, something will come to me soon. :)

Yay! I won't be working on Saturday sadly, but I am hoping to do a little bookstore crawling myself. :)
Yay for bookstore crawling! Perhaps one day our paths will cross and I will introduce myself as the queer book nerd you know from the internet. :-)
I can't wait! :)

I know all about tottering TBR piles. :-)
Of course you do -- it's the mark of a person I like 😊

I’m sure something great will come to you!
