I'm really looking forward to reading Yong's book. I've held off until I finish some others first but I am really glad to read this review. Frans de Waal cited the research and thinking about an animal's umwelt in his books. Understanding how different animals process the world makes me aware of my own limits and how very vast intelligence and sensory powers can be.

I hope you enjoy it! It is truly extraordinary just how many ways there are to perceive the world, and Yong does such a great job explaining them—and acknowledging the limits of what we, as humans, can understand about animals.

Laura, if I were to replace the lamb with another ground meat in the flatbreads, which do you think would be best? Pork? Beef? (Sadly although my grandparents ran a sheep farm for decades I have always hated lamb!) But I love the sound of these flatbreads!

I think it would work with either! The spices I used are ones I often pair with lamb, but I don't think there's any reason it wouldn't be good with other meat. (And you could always change the spices, too.) I actually like the idea of making them with pork, and I think ground chicken would work, too. Let me know how it turns out if you try it!

Talk to me about Winter World -- it's been on my nonfiction shelves for years and approaching every winter, I always think, this will be the year I read! Alas. Did you like it?

I loved it! I read it ages ago and don't remember much about it, honestly but I remember loving it. I ended up reading a few other books by Henrich afterward, Summer World and The Trees in My Forest. Winter World was my favorite.

Good to know. Hopefully this is the year I get to it! 🤞
